Learn to pronounce words correctly. Words like respite, a commonly mispronounced word, should be avoided in speech unless one can pronounce them adequately. Common words, particularly ones that are commonly mispronounced (especially by children), must be learned properly. This includes words such as library and February.
If someone corrects you on your pronunciation you need not be offended. They are trying to help you. If you are interviewing for a job and you pronounce the month Feb-ru-ary or where you worked in college as the libary, you will look awfully foolish.
When you talk to someone face-to-face, a mispronunciation is like a misspelling in an e-mail. There is no reason for this to occur. In the e-mail you have spell check and in speech you have others to help correct you.
