Skype.
If there is or was a God, Skype is undoubtedly one of his/her gifts to man. Okay, maybe not, but Skype kicks ass none the less.
For my summer internship at a Jewish nursing home, one of my projects was to set up two webcams for the residents/tenants (those are the independent and assisted living people) to use to video chat with their families. This is really something special for people in this situation. For example, one tenant who has expressed interest in this opportunity has a daughter in Israel, as well as grand-children. This represents, for her, an unparalleled opportunity to connect and communicate with her child and grand-children.
Skype, however, is not just for old people. Tonight I used it while playing Team Fortress 2 with my friends in New York. We weren't using it to cheat, the conclusion some of you may have jumped to. We were simply using it so we could talk, almost like we would if we were in the same room. If we were to use the in-game chat, everyone would have had to listen to out conversation. This also allowed us to talk if we were on different servers or on different teams on the same server.
So yeah, Skype is versatile, free and awesome (like twist ties).

Auxilary tip: Bring your webcam; otherwise you run the risk of being left out of the conversation or using your friends as a medium to speak to your other friends.
Auxilary information: Friends are not a particularly good medium for sound. The meaning of your speech may be distorted and or reversed and they cannot be relied upon to carry things like tone or accent. On the other hand, they are better than some other mediums (400 miles of air, etc)
