Tip 53, for 8/9/08

Here's another tip from Nancy Clark's Sports Nutrition Guidebook, alluded to yesterday... "if you can get to your destination hungry rather than ravenous, it can help you in terms of your food choices."

Soooo, lets say you're hungry. Like really really goddamn hungry. You arrive home and open the pantry. You grab:

A. The fruits and vegetables, cut and wash them and eat them
B. The chips, grip 'em and rip 'em and you have yourself a snack

Unfortunately, even if you would like to think you would choose A, most people choose B if they are really hungry. Junk food is convenient and satisfying. So, if you not really really goddamn hungry and are instead just hungry or goddamn hungry, you are more likely to make the healthier choice. This tip is particularly relevant if you are dieting to lose weight, as this will help you avoid diet breaking foods.

In order to avoid this really really goddamn hungry state, eat more often in smaller portions. You could try eating more (small) meals per day (like 5 or 6). You could also try spacing out your meals and their relative sizes to cover the times when you have been really really goddamn hungry.

For example, if you have problems when you get back from class or work and you can't wait for dinner and you reach for the Lay's, try this: eat a good sized breakfast and eat and late and/or large lunch. If you end up eating dinner for lunch, so be it- just adjust your dinner into lunch-size calories (eat a sandwich and salad or something).
