This one comes from my friend RE (check out his stuff over here) but it's a great piece of software that I've used before too. VLC Media Player is a free open-source media player that is really light-weight, small download, and ridiculously full-featured. VLC can play almost every kind of movie and music file you can think of, as well as stuff like DVDs. If you have a movie, show or song in a format that you can't get Windows Media Player or iTunes or whatever to play (.ogg, .mvk, etc.) give VLC a shot, it's pretty awesome.
VLC is available for a crap-load of different OSes, so compatibility shouldn't be an issue for anyone. It also comes in a portable flavor, meaning you can throw it on a USB drive and play movies on any computer without installing any software.
