Tip 98: Really Good Software Part 2, CCleaner

CCleaner (formerly Crap Cleaner) is a really useful, powerful piece of free software. It empties out your temporary files (internet cache files, temp files, cookies, log files etc) which slow your computer down and take up space on your hard drive. These files can really add up, I ran CCleaner on my friend's computer and it deleted more than a gigabyte of crap files that he didn't need.

CCleaner also features a registry cleaner. It gives you the option to back up your registry then it will scan for issues. Most of the issues are things like unused file extensions that have registry keys associated with them. This kind of stuff often is left behind when you install and uninstall a program. It is a good idea to clean out the registry (in a safe way) once in awhile, as this helps to promote speed and stability of your system.
